Heritage

Old German house The idea of the Heritage Initiative encompasses pre colonial life, it encompasses the last 100 years that the Eastern Cape experienced not just a struggle for the land but a whole era of social, religious and economic change. It’s about remembering and sharing all of these stories, recording and treasuring customs and beliefs not just of that of the Xhosa but also of the Germans that Settled here in 1856. This reminiscence is important not just in terms of the remembering the past but in deepening an understanding of the present.

With funding from the Amathole District Municipality, the Heritage Initiative is underway as also a poverty alleviation and skills transferal scheme. We have started renovating and working on old buildings, to serve the purpose of a museum, cultural centre and Tourist information office, that will permanently house the stories, photographs, beadwork and artifacts of the Xhosa Families in the area as well as the history and movements of the German settlers.

This is all part of a larger vision for Hamburg, Ntilini, Bodium and Bell that incorporates the area into a heritage route, consisting of an experience of walking trails, ox-wagon rides and the rich beauty and tradition of the Xhosa people on their land.
