An overview of the Keiskamma Music Academy since its inception

The Keiskamma Music Academy, with its Recorder Project as first phase, is situated in the rural village of Hamburg, reaching out to the adjoining villages of Ntilini, Bell and Bodiam. The villages are nearly 100 kilometers from East London along the coast in the direction of Port Elizabeth. These villages are isolated, with few opportunities for the youth. Many social problems such as teenage pregnancies, boredom, unemployment, alcoholism, contraction of HIV, school dropout, and criminality prevail. Unless programmes are developed in the area for the youth, their outlook on life is limited, their options are few, and the chances of them slipping through the cracks and becoming another hopeless statistic are enormous.

The academy is sufficiently funded.

The community has already started to organise themselves around art and the appreciation thereof with the Keiskamma Arts Project. The Keiskamma Music Academy: Recorder Project has been initiated by Helen Vosloo under the umbrella of the Keiskamma Trust. www.keiskamma.org The Trust activities include the Keiskamma health project which includes the HIV/Aids treatment centre, (incorporating prevention and education, care and support, early treatment and the hospice), Art Project, Bursary Fund and Museum and Cultural Centre, Gardening Project, Early Childhood and Development Project, Education and Capoeria Group.
